Competency #1
Teachers should plan shorter activities so that we keep our student's attention. Longer activities are harder for our students to sit still through and we want to keep them actively engaged in learning.
Using manipulatives and lots of hands-on strategies are helpful in seeing that all of our students are finding ways of learning that work best for them.
Child development involves emotional, physical, social, and cognitive development.
Puberty can have an effect on our student's self esteem and we should do our best to make all of our students feel good about themselves.
Our students need to find out who they are and what their interests are. Their identity formation is very important.
Competency #2
Our students are extremely diverse.
Diversity includes things like race, gender, ethnicity, and culture.
Students with special needs should be included in our regular classrooms as much as possible.
We need to CELEBRATE the diversity in our students by including some of their customs into our lesson planning.
To decrease stereotyping, we as teachers need to keep from grouping students together by things like culture or race.
Gifted students may need more challenging work because some of the regular schoolwork is too easy for them. Challenge them :)
Competency #5
The climate in our classroom should be conductive to learning.
Our classroom should be a safe, nurturing place for our students. They should feel comfortable, as they spend a lot of time in the classroom.
Teachers must make sure all of our students are safe and that we are being supportive in the classroom.
Higher expectations by teachers equals higher goals achieved by students.
Routines and schedules help students to know what is coming next and what to expect in the classroom.
Competency #6
Classroom rules should be clearly posted where students can see them. There should be no more than 5 classroom rules.
Let your students help come up with the classroom rules and they are more likely to follow them.
We should have a positive classroom environment.
Behavior problems should be handled with great care. We don't know what our students may be dealing with outside of the classroom.
A positive classroom should encourage students to control their own behavior.
